“Secret” nude beaches - should we be talking about them?

This is something we come up against fairly regularly.

Whenever we feature a lesser-known nude or clothing-optional beach, we'll sometimes hear: “Don’t tell everyone about this place!” The concern is usually that more publicity means more crowds, more gawkers, more creepers, and eventually losing what made the beach special in the first place.

We completely understand where that comes from. Some of the best beaches are great precisely because they’re quiet, community-driven places.

But we also wonder whether keeping beaches “secret” actually protects them.

Most supposedly secret beaches can already be found through Google, Reddit, social media, old forums, word of mouth, etc. Our thinking has generally been that if people are going to discover them, we’d rather they find information that explains the culture, etiquette, consent, photography rules and how to respect the people already using the beach.

There’s also the bigger question of how naturism grows if newcomers are effectively told: “These places exist, but we don’t want you knowing where they are.”

So we’re curious what everyone here thinks.

Should some nude beaches genuinely be kept off maps and out of articles? Or is responsible, respectful information ultimately better for protecting and normalising these places?

And for those of you who are regulars at smaller beaches — have you actually seen publicity change your beach for better or worse?

Would genuinely love to hear different perspectives on this one.

I’m probably going to sound like the grumpy old bloke here, but I remember when you found these places because somebody trusted you enough to tell you where they were.

That actually meant something.

Now everything has to be pinned on a map, photographed, reviewed and promoted to thousands of people. Then everyone acts surprised when a quiet beach ends up full of gawkers and mobile phones and people who have no idea how to behave.

I understand the argument about educating newcomers, and yes some places are just full of old blokes. But I don’t buy the idea that every single place needs more publicity just because it can technically be found online somewhere.

Some places survive because they’re a little difficult to find.
Curious whether I’m alone on this. especially from people who’ve been using the same beach for 20 plus years.

I have to say I share a similar viewpoint to BeachBum above. 99% of beaches are already marked as nude beaches on map apps (whether official or unofficial) so why spoil the privacy afforded to less well known ones and thus give regulars the freedom to enjoy the beach free from gawkers? For anyone new to naturism there are already a ton of beaches across the world which are well known, so why not point them towards an official beach for their first time to get them into truly social nakedness?

I just think that there's very little of our coastlines left now that are unexplored so there's no harm in keeping a private beach private.
